Canine Behavioural Problem Solving

Recognise, Understand, Address & Solve The Problem

The biggest killer of dogs under two years of age is euthanasia as a result of behavioural issues

Whenever I address a room full of dog owners and ask the question:

"Who here has a dog that they consider to have behavioural problems?"

I invariably end up with most, if not all hands raised with just a little bit of chuckling seemingly added in for effect. It is a seriously common occurrence that affects nearly all (probably all) owner/dog relationships to one degree or another. Most owners would consider their problems both minor and normal, but there is often much more to canine behaviour than meets the eye!

To put this situation bluntly into some sort of perspective, I have seen reports that number the amount of unwanted dogs euthanased each year in Victoria alone to be in excess of sixty thousand (60,000).

This is truly disturbing!

And what makes this situation even worse is the fact that the biggest killer of dogs under two years of age is... euthanasia as a result of behavioural issues.

Helping owners to deal with undesirable canine behaviours has long been a major part of Alpha Dog Training's overall service. This has not happened by accident and it is again the result of dedicated research and development into techniques and strategies that actually work in the real world... for real owners with real dogs!

A lot of this R&D has taken place in people's homes (through private tuition and Boarding School For Dogs), working with their dogs in the exact environment in which the problem occurs. From this practical knowledge base Alpha has developed instructor training that targets techniques that we have proven to work and consistently produce results for owners and their dogs. Our instructors study very hard to learn these methods and take a lot of pride in being able to offer solutions that actually work.

Dogs and cats can get along

Dogs and cats can get along, even if the circumstances prior to training weren't ideal. Here is Neo, the cat chaser, meeting his new house-mate for the first time! With clear leadership and language you can achieve almost anything when it comes to canine behavioural modification.

There is a lot more to solving undesirable canine behaviours than just addressing the perceived problem at hand. Owners are taught how Alpha's obedience training method is actually a major part of the solution process and how leadership, or lack of it, is the actual cause of their dog's problems. Again, we can prove this easily and once explained and demonstrated it becomes quite clear that there is a very different way to view canine behavioural problems.

With this in mind, canine behavioural modification is also linked into the training process at Alpha and the skills required by owners to communicate and lead their dogs in non-obedience situations are all factored into the fundamentals of the training method. Whilst you learn to train your dog in obedience, you are actually developing some vital communication skills that are central to all our behavioural modification techniques and strategies.

The success of the method lies in the consistency of the method! And as with all things simple and effective, it has taken many, many years of hard work to eradicate the complexities that are so often put in the way by trying to be too clever. Once we focused on achieving results by actually working with owners and their dogs rather than theorising what might happen in certain situations, many distractions disappeared and true purpose emerged.

The development of Canine Good Behaviour Shaping and its introduction into Alpha Dog Training's has brought our problem solving abilities to a whole new level. The proven techniques work right before your eyes and help owners to read and reinforce their dogs behaviours in a manner and language that is totally consistent across the obedience training and behavioural modification concepts at Alpha.
