We Train Rain, Hail or Shine!
Classes are held every Wednesday evening and every Sunday morning. The puppy education session and different obedience levels run over two, one-hour sessions with Levels 1 3 and Puppy Class running in the first hour and Levels 4 6 and Advanced Class running in the second hour.
Each obedience class is followed by a 20 minute help & advice session where customers can receive extra help with their obedience exercises or advice on behavioural problem solving. With extremely high instructor ratios of about 1 instructor to three or four dogs in each class, there is plenty of expert advice to go around.
Alpha Dog Training does not train on long weekends, but does train through school holidays and only has a short break over the Christmas period.

Alpha Dog Training prides itself on the development of teaching and training innovations that are all driven by a genuine motivation to produce realistic and lasting results for our customers.
The Alpha "Split System" Class Structure has truly revolutionised the way obedience training is taught to owners in weekly class environments. Combined with the Alpha Interactive Tuition Strategies, the Alpha Real-Life Obedience Challenges and the Alpha Integrated Distraction Training, the Split System is a truly clever approach to teaching obedience exercises to extremely high standards, even at level one.
Years of research and development into this dynamic teaching system saw its long awaited introduction into Alpha Dog Training back in August 2006. As usual, there was an important focus on instructor training and the twelve months leading up to the Split Systems introduction was an important time for our dedicated staff to become totally familiar with the finer points of this new teaching approach. As the start date loomed, we all became increasingly excited about the new beginning for Alpha Dog Training.
The new system saw the abolishment of the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Level concept and replaced it with six distinct, pre-advanced and then three advanced obedience levels that were focused on the less is more approach to teaching. Each obedience exercise was allocated to the appropriate level after much deliberation during the development stages of the system.

The Alpha Split System: Combined with the Alpha Random Training Principles and Interactive tuition, it's a very exciting clever way to teach dogs obedience at your own pace! |
Each level focuses on two core exercises that are taught to advanced entry-level standards. The benefits of this teaching approach are many, to both the students and the instructors! In fact, despite all our forward planning and realistic expectations, there were benefits to the Split System that far exceeded our predictions at virtually every level. The results have been simply stunning and it makes Alpha Dog Training a very exciting place to be for dog owners and instructors alike.
For starters, the dogs at Level 1 are so impressive, in such a short time, regardless of the issues they had before starting training with us. To emphasise this point even further, our Training Director, Greg Fontana makes a very strong point of highlighting the Level 1 dogs to those attending the First FREE Session at Alpha. When potential customers see just how good these dogs are under distraction, despite their relatively short time at dog training, it is quite motivational to say the least!
The levels that follow add more exercises, two at a time, all being taught to incredibly high standards whilst the owners train their dogs under distraction. To achieve this ideal, the Split System allows instructors to utilise the unique Alpha Random Training Principles in their teaching technique, empowering owners to increase or decrease the level of distraction relevant to their dog's Control Zone, yet another concept developed at Alpha to help with training application in real-life situations away from obedience classes.
|
The Control Zone Concept developed at Alpha teaches owners to assess their handling skills along with their dog's sociability so they can then train under more distraction, or less distraction.

By the time owners reach Level 6, their dogs are extremely well trained indeed and they haven't even reached advanced yet! In fact, we call this the BBQ level, where owners fully understand how to control their dogs in bustling situations such as a backyard party with heaps of guests around. This level of understanding is achieved due to the fact that in Alphas Split System classes, much emphasis is put on handler education. It is our mission to help every individual achieve a true, practical understanding of their dog's strengths and limitations and to be able to handle them in any situation calmly and safely.
After Level 6, owners move into the advanced levels, looking to attain true reliability and control under distraction whilst their dogs work off-lead. The three advanced levels are structured in a way that prepares both owner and dog to this high level of obedience training. By the time owners reach the off-lead level they often find that there is just so much you can achieve with all the different obedience commands. To that end, Advanced Level 3 can become the endless level where owners continue to enjoy the training and socialisation whilst striving for higher standards of obedience and having fun with their dog.
